Georgia AAAA Basketball Roundup

Georgia is well known for its love of football, but what gets overlooked is that it is a strong basketball state as well. A lot of quality basketball is being played in and around Atlanta in particular. Urban areas such as Atlanta are known for producing, Division 1 quality athletes.

Miller Grove High School won the Georgia boys AAAA basketball championship for 2010-2011. Miller Grove is about 16 miles east of Atlanta on Interstate 20. The 2010-2011 girls AAAA champions were from Fayette County High School, which can be found about 27 miles south of Atlanta in Fayetteville.

In the past Georgia High School Boy’s basketball Player of the Year has been dominated by players from the Atlanta area. Derrick Favors of South Atlanta High, now with the Utah Jazz, was a two time Georgia Player of the Year, for the years 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. The player of the year for 2009-2010 came from Walton High in nearby Marietta, Ryan Harrow, just finished his freshman year at North Carolina State.

Players from the Atlanta high school basketball scene have made an impact at both the college and professional level. Georgia regarded as a “football heaven” is gaining traction as a recruiting hotbed for high school basketball.
