Krunk founder and acting GM Duane Hughes earned the nickname Spyder in the late seventies on the playgrounds of Queens, NY. Here, he is on "D" (middle w/knee brace), in the City Wide Tournament at Montebellier Park, in Springfield Gardens. Besides the Dr. J type afro and knee brace, he is wearing Bright Orange Converse canvas basketball shoes! "My shorts had orange spider webs stitched into them so I was getting heckled for a minute. Until I dunked on the layup line! Then the heckles turned to quiet whispers of respect", recalls Hughes, who, two years later became Spyder D, the first rap artist to form his own label. |

Here, "Spyder" Duane Hughes is leading the break ('Fro flying back) against a very formidable Riverdale High School in his junior year for Delehanty High School (Jamaica Prep). In this 1977 photo, he is wearing two knee braces. Evidence of the toll the playgrounds had taken upon his knees. |
